A hand-held metal detector (HHMD) is a vital portable security and utility device designed for precise, localized screening. Following an initial alert from a walk-through arch, it is used to pinpoint the exact location of a metal object on a person or within a bag.

Operated via a single hand, it features a sensitive electromagnetic coil in its search head that generates an alert—typically an audible beep, a visual light, or haptic vibration when passed near ferrous or non-ferrous metals.
