Networking Switches
A networking switch is a LAN's central nervous system that automatically connects devices such as PCs, printers, and servers. It operates at the OSI model's data link layer (Layer 2) and is significantly more efficient than a hub.
A switch, unlike a hub, learns the unique MAC addresses of connected devices rather than broadcasting data to all ports. When it gets a data frame, it evaluates the target address and routes traffic only to the port where the desired device is situated. This generates dedicated, concurrent communication pathways, which significantly improves network performance and security.
Switches are critical for current business and residential infrastructures because they eliminate unwanted data collisions and limit traffic, resulting in quicker, more reliable, and secure data transfer within a network.
